God The Poet

If god were a poet, I would have faith.
If god were a poet, all interpretations of the bible
would happen in a chat room,
he would understand why some poets don’t capitalize
he would speak honestly or brutally about brutality,
small and large, in this world.
If god were a poet, there would be no churches,
but many more open mic evenings,
everyone would stop in street,
captivated by a feather in the wind,
the humbling beauty of the stars, constellations,
planets, the milky way that has inspired questions
like who and how and why would be seen by anyone
who simply looked up.
If god were a poet, the bible would be returned for rewrites.
Many would read in red pen – clarity.
there would be no evil, no good – just people trying get
along and offer a hand to others as they go,
there would be no banks, money or stock exchanges;
instead, we would barter with free verse stanzas,
rhyming couplets and villanelles.
If god were a poet, Leonard Cohen would be his poet laureate,
medical explorers would discover the DNA string
for kindness and love,
everyone would eat and North Americans
wouldn’t throw away 35 percent of their food.
If god were a poet, people would understand the irony of
John Lennon’s comment ‘we’re more popular than jesus;’
war wouldn’t exist; we wouldn’t understand the concept,
if war and killing stilled marred our lives,
solutions would be creative and quick.
If god were a poet, I would remember your birthday,
we would all be born knowing right from wrong –
that our first moral obligation is to help.
politicians would do the right thing for our children,
not re-election in 4 years.
If god were a poet, we would stand up and applaud,
homeless people would have shelter, sick people hospital beds,
justice and equality would be normal not exceptions or
If god were a poet, I would write like
Karen Kain pirouetting,
Wayne Gretzky ice dancing,
Kandinsky painting the universe or
Glenn Gould’s fingers on piano keys,
cafes and coffee hangouts would hum with discussions
about the miraculous migration of monarch butterflies,
not investments and business plans.
If god were a poet, the vatican would print chapbooks,
he would wander through forests, on beaches,
in summery city centres with a pen and a notebook,
he would take some quiet time to think and write.
If god were a poet, we would all know the secret of the universe,
all religions would be one and we wouldn’t need that religion,
Stephen Harper would know better,
anyone could express their opinion by putting
their name on a sign-up sheet.
If god were a poet, rich nations would give more than take,
there would only be three commandments –
write, write and write some more,
he would pay more attention to you and me.
If god were a poet,
my children would be safe,
I wouldn’t worry about them at night.
If god were a poet,
prayers would be poems,
and I wouldn’t have written this one.
